POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for providing competency-based training to students in a manner that prepares successful program graduates for entry-level employment as machining and tool and die making or in precision tooling and machining trades, working in manual machining, CNC machining, medical equipment repair and plant maintenance. This is a grant funded position with a start date of July 1, 2008. The work schedule for this position is Monday Friday, 3:15 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Instruction Use effective competency-based teaching techniques, instructional materials, and appropriate media support and conduct classroom lecture, course work and laboratory projects in the use of power-operated machine tools to create metal parts and tools for building various kinds of engines, machinery, equipment and for plant maintenance. Provide individualized instruction. Mentor, encourage, counsel and guide students toward the completion of program requirements i.e., course assignments, interpersonal relationships, career goals and responsible work habits. Facilitate a process for on-going student input for instructional and program improvement. Classroom Management Respond appropriately to student problems and provide assistance in solving them in accordance with college procedures. Manage the classroom and the machinist technology program in a manner that ensures a suitable learning environment. Ensure that appropriate safety practices are used at all times, students are knowledgeable of safety techniques and all equipment is maintained in a safe working condition. Requisition and maintain control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program. Evaluate and document students competency attainment, course progress, attendance, work based learning experiences and workplace behaviors at least quarterly and in accordance with college policy and/or procedures. Maintain required written and computerized records and respond to requests for information in a timely manner. Maintain records of all shop job instructional projects. Curriculum Development Develop and maintain full program curriculum documentation in accordance with the approved college format and ensure that instruction is consistent with current industry or business standards, technologies, procedures, equipment and materials. Plan and develop meaningful student learning experiences based upon current industry or business practices. Ensure that the training program requires the use of library or online resources and students acquire the ability to access and use these resources. Annually validate and review course competencies and skills required for industry entry level employment in the industry or profession and adapt curriculum to match those skills when needed. Collaboration with other instructors, staff and advisory committee members Coordinate with other instructors, support services staff and advisory committee members to ensure a cohesive learning environment dedicated to providing industry with qualified entry-level employees. Identify, develop and maintain an advisory committee appropriate to the specific area of instruction. Maintain friendly and cooperative relationships with respective industry Cooperate with and assist administration in the recruitment of students and promotion of the program. Coordinate, organize, and provide job placement assistance to students. Other Responsibilities Attend staff meetings Other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Completion of an approved apprenticeship program OR two years formal training at an accredited technical or community college in an applicable trade. Seven (7) years experience as a journeyman machinist two (2) of which include supervisory or lead experience; this experience must be within the last three (3) years. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Two (2) years of managerial level experience or equivalent in the machinist field. Experience working with persons of disability and/or learning-disabled persons. Prior teaching in vocational atmosphere. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Knowledge of: Production machinery. Basic machine shop equipment. Inventorying and stocking of shop supplies. Tool and die work. Heat-treat processes and metallurgy. Computerized numerical control machinery. Skilled in: Demonstrating the ability to communicate and effectively teach students in a manner that results in development of industry validated entry-level competencies. Simple math, metric, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and compound angles. Mechanical drawings and blueprint reading. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Highly effective verbal and written communication. Ability to: Instruct a diverse student population varying in ages (sixteen through mature adulthood), backgrounds and levels of experience in a manner that facilitates an effective learning environment. Demonstrate and model appropriate and respectful workplace behaviors. Work in an environment with frequent interruptions. Demonstrate effective leadership abilities. Operate personal computer using current software pertinent to college and program needs, including word processing, Internet and e-mail. Market and promote program for purposes of continued program enrollment. Ensure student access to program facilities in accordance with published hours of operation. Establish and maintain effective working relationships, maintain confidentiality, and interact in a positive manner with diverse college and community populations.
